Root Canal Treatment

Few words put as much fear in the hearts of dental patients as “you need a root canal.”

The funny thing about root canals, though, is that the pain that leads up to needing one is far worse than the procedure itself. What’s more, a root canal is actually a positive thing because it ends up saving a tooth that might otherwise be lost to infection.

If you have a toothache and are worried you might need a root canal, worry no more: Call Dr. Edward Sloyer or Dr. Brian J. Davis of Smile Designs of Long Island. Talk to them about this common, straightforward procedure that can end your pain—and save your tooth.

How Do You Know if You Need a Root Canal?

If you have an infected tooth root, you most likely need a root canal. The first indicator of infection is usually a throbbing pain in the infected area that gets worse over time. The tooth itself may also be decayed, contributing to the seriousness of the problem.

A tooth that has developed chips, cracks, or fissures along the surface or has had a recurring need for dental procedures can be an indicator of potential problems.

It’s important to remember that dental pain is never normal, so if you are experiencing any kind of pain, you need to see your dentist immediately.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Although the procedure might sound ominous, root canal therapy is a common, simple procedure that not only eliminates infection, but it keeps it from spreading. Years ago, an infected tooth root meant almost certain tooth extraction. But with today’s root canal treatment, the infection can be removed, the tooth root cleaned, and the tooth structure saved.

During treatment, either Dr. Sloyer or Dr. Davis will remove the infected pulp from the tooth root. The area will then be thoroughly cleaned, then filled and sealed to prevent further infection.

Because this procedure will weaken the tooth structure, the tooth will be fitted with a crown. This will strengthen the tooth structure left behind so you will be able to chew normally.

Root Canals Restore Good Oral Health

If you have a toothache, don’t hesitate to come in for an examination. As with most things involving the dentist, the earlier a problem is treated, the better. It’s important to eliminate infection so you can protect the tooth in question as well as the healthy teeth surrounding it.

When you come in for an exam, your dentist will be able to determine whether a root canal is needed or not. If you do need one, your dentist can do the procedure immediately—and it can often be completed in just one appointment.
